What are the risks and

What are the risks and precautions for the procedure of galactorhea?

Galactorrhea, a milky

Galactorrhea, a milky discharge from the nipples that is not associated with the production of milk for breastfeeding, can be treated through a surgical procedure that removes the milk ducts from both breasts. Unfortunately, once the milk ducts are removed, you will be unable to breastfeed any future children, which is considered the major disadvantage of surgical treatment of galactorrhea. Other risks of this procedure include scarring and infection, as with all surgical procedures.

Before undergoing this procedure, it is important to have your doctor investigate potential underlying causes, such as medication use, hypothyroidism, or a pituitary tumor. Once any issues identified are treated, the nipple discharge may go away on its own, without surgery. There are also medications that may be prescribed to reduce this discharge.
