Woman's Breast Implant Bursts During Assault

Women considering breast implants should know that implants are not designed to be permanent. There can be complications requiring implant removal, though this is not very common. However, stories of trauma involving breast implants rupturing serve as a warning that it is possible.

According to Ohio cops, a woman's breast implant exploded in her chest as she was being assaulted by her boyfriend. The Smoking Gun says that 60-year-old Samuel Cole was arrested this weekend after allegedly punching and choking the victim, who remains unnamed. Cole apparently stomped on the woman's chest so hard that her left breast implant ruptured.

Though she required surgery to replace the implant, it's possible that having breast implants saved her from further injury by cushioning her chest from the blows. Some car accident victims have credited their implants for acting as airbags during the crash, and the implants could have acted in a similar manner here.

Cole took the 52-year-old victim to the hospital for treatment, after threatening her not to tell hospital staff how she had received the injuries. While blunt trauma can cause a breast implant to rupture, it typically requires significant force to cause an implant, whether filled with silicone or saline, to burst. Hospital employees became suspicious when the victim arrived with a burst breast implant, and contacted police.
