How much does breast surgery cost?

Breast surgery costs vary widely from patient to patient. These costs vary depending on the type and complexity of the procedure, whether a hospital stay is involved, the volume of tissue being added or removed, the surgeon, and many other factors. These variables are often divided into two categories: those related to the specifics of your surgery, and those not related to the surgery, such as the geographic location and the surgeon's reputation.

Many factors involved in the cost

The costs of breast surgery include not only the surgeon's own fee, but also the anesthesia, operating room, and other expenses. Be sure that the price quote provided by your plastic surgeon includes all of the necessary expenses so that you don't get surprised by add-on fees. Before deciding whether to undergo the procedure, it is important to understand all of the charges associated with the surgery.

Average Costs

These variables can vary significantly from case to case, making it difficult to generalize the costs of breast surgery. Still, there are some industry averages published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. For breast surgeries, the average surgeon's fee in 2009 ranged from $2,339 for revision surgeries following breast augmentation to $3,099 for male breast reduction, $3,331 for breast augmentation, and $4,185 for a breast lift. These average include only the surgeon's fee; the total cost for these procedures may include several thousand dollars of other expenses.

Will my insurance cover it?

Many breast surgeries are considered cosmetic procedures, and therefore are not covered by health insurance. Some, such as breast reconstruction following mastectomy, breast reductions, and male breast reduction may be covered by your health insurance if they are performed for health reasons. Although not all of these procedures are covered by health insurance, do not let that dissuade you from pursuing the surgery you desire. Many surgeons offer flexible financing options or can direct you to companies that finance cosmetic surgery.
