Those from elsewhere in the country often picture Los Angeles as the world of divas, movie stars, and glam models. If you assume that women have to emulate a "Barbie doll look" to be successful in L.A., you're not alone. Everyone in L.A. has fake boobs, right? This myth has been around since at least 1991. In the movie "L.A. Story," Steve Martin climbs into bed with Sarah Jessica Parker, remarking "your breasts feel so strange." To this, she replies "oh, that’s because they’re real."
With the media exposure of Los Angeles celebrities, most of whom have had some work done, more and more women are going under the knife to look as beautiful as those they see on TV. Shows like "Real Housewives of Orange County" feature buxom blondes, perpetuating this stereotype. For several decades now, casting directors have based their choices, at least in part, on superficial characteristics such as breast size.
In fact, there's no proof that more women in Los Angeles have fake boobs than in any other city. Still, there is some evidence that women in L.A. Think about breast implants differently than women in other regions. In California, many plastic surgeons agree that patients generally take the "bigger is better" approach, whereas women in other areas of the country may choose smaller implants. Women are especially open about their cosmetic surgery in Southern California, home to Hollywood, celebrities, and reality TV shows.
Today, breast enlargement isn't just for California women. Over the past decade, plastic surgeries such as breast implants have surged in popularity. Breast enlargement is currently the top cosmetic surgery procedure performed by plastic surgeons throughout the U.S., not just in sunny California. Last year, more than 300,000 women underwent breast augmentation in the United States alone. A wide variety of women today seek out breast surgery for a number of different reasons, and it doesn't just have to do with the stars they see in Hollywood.
