Why do women get breast implants?

Most women who undergo breast augmentation do so because they wish to increase the size of their breasts for aesthetic reasons. Following the placement of breast implants, patients can expect a larger chest with increased cleavage. Many women also report increased self-confidence after undergoing breast augmentation.

This is a popular surgical procedure for women who feel that their natural breast size is not proportionate with the rest of their body. For example, they may have an A or B cup, but feel that their curvy body is better suited to breasts that fill out a C or D cup. Although you may have an image in your mind of a woman whose breasts are overly large and obviously surgically enhanced, for many women this is not the goal. They are seeking breast implants to bring their breasts into proportion with the rest of their body.

While adult women of any age can undergo breast augmentation, it is particularly popular as a way to counteract the loss of breast volume that can result from pregnancy and breastfeeding, aging, or significant weight loss. These patients often find that breast implants make their figure appear younger and more toned.

While typically chosen for cosmetic reasons, there are also other reasons to get breast implants. They are commonly used during breast reconstruction after a woman has lost breast tissue to cancer or trauma. For survivors of cancer and trauma, breast reconstruction using implants provides the opportunity to restore their breasts to a more natural and feminine-looking contour, improving patients' confidence levels. Implants may also be used as part of male-to-female sex reassignment surgeries.
