Cosmetic vaginal surgery

As plastic surgery becomes a mainstream idea, you can expect many procedures to become more popular – not only the standard breast augmentation or tummy tuck, but also cosmetic vaginal surgery. These procedures are sought by women who wish to change aesthetic issues related to their genitalia.

The most common example of a cosmetic procedure performed on a woman's vaginal area is the labiaplasty or labioplasty, to treat labias that are large or asymmetric. While most women who undergo this procedure do so for purely aesthetic concerns, in some cases large or thick labia may be a source of physical discomfort. During this procedure, the large or uneven labia lips are cut and shortened. Other cosmetic vaginal surgery techniques include the hoodectomy, which exposes the clitoris to increase sexual stimulation.

Cosmetic vaginal surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia. This process may use a scalpel, special scissors, or a surgical laser. The incision pattern and surgical technique chosen depend on the woman's aesthetic desires and anatomy. Once the genital region has been contoured by the surgeon, the incisions are closed with sutures.

Potential complications, such as infection, the buildup of excess scar tissue, and temporary numbness have caused the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to oppose such procedures, despite their popularity. In addition, there is the concern that some women could be seeking surgery only because their partner wishes them to undergo such procedures. However, many women have found this procedure to give them increased body confidence.
