What do breast implants feel like?

One of the common concerns of many breast augmentation patients is whether their chosen implant will feel natural enough. Silicone breast implants – particularly the newer style of "gummy bear" implants – are said to feel more lifelike than saline ones. Once implanted, many woman say that squeezing their breast feels like squeezing natural breast tissue. The silicone gel is able to mimic the naturally soft feel of breast tissue. With saline-filled implants, some difference may be noticeable between the composition of natural breast tissue and the harder feel of the implant.

The feel of a breast implant is dependent not only on type, but also on size and placement. Those who choose moderately-sized implants often find that their natural breast tissue helps the implant to "blend in' and feel more natural, while those who choose an overly-large implant sometimes find that their implant is more noticeable in the chest. In addition, breast implants placed under the natural chest tissues tend to feel more lifelike than those situated above the muscle.

Many patients find that their breast implants feel the most unnatural immediately following surgery. Many women note that their implants feel heavy, since their body is not accustomed to carrying around the extra weight in their chest. However, this sensation should be gone within six months or two, as the tissues adjust to the new implants.

Be sure to discuss these choices with your surgeon. Determining the right size and type of breast implant will help to ensure that your new breasts feel as natural as possible.
