Although most women find that breast implants give them a boost of confidence, making their breasts appear larger and perkier, this procedure is not without side effects. After breast augmentation surgery, you can expect a recovery period lasting several weeks.
As patients awaken from anesthesia, it is common to feel groggy, tired, or nauseous for a few days. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication for this time. The chest area will be sore and tender for several weeks as the natural tissues adjust to the new implants. During this time, expect side effects such as bruising and redness. There may also be drains placed in the incisions to remove excess fluid from the chest area.
Swelling is among the most common side effects of breast implants. Many patients find that swelling of the breast tissue obscures the results of their surgery for the first few days. Wearing a compression garment such as a surgical bra or elastic bandage can help the tissues heal and alleviate side effects. As the swelling and other side effects subside over the first one to two weeks following surgery, you will be able to see the results of your breast augmentation and return to your normal activity level.
While the side effects of breast augmentation surgery affect the entire chest area, the incisions in particular are likely to experience certain after-effects. These incisions may feel puffy, itchy, or tight as they heal. They may be in several locations such as in the armpit or belly button or around the areola and nipple. Though the surgeon selects the incision to minimize visible scars, you can expect to see some scarring, which will fade over time.
